Familiar laughs.
Coming from a room at the end of the corridor.
He slowly approached... until he recognizes Marilyn's voice.
"Poor little Andreina... she still believes that Sergio married for love.
His legs trembled.
And then he heard Sergio's laughter.
"That woman was perfect for appearances. Tender, obedient and so naïve that she even thanked us for all the help with the wedding.
Tears began to fall uncontrollably.
But the worst came later.
"Did you see his face when I told him he was tired?" Marilyn sneered. He almost cried right there.
They both burst out laughing.
Like hyenas.
As if destroying someone was fun.
Andreina felt nauseous.
His breath was burning.
And then he understood something terrible.
Not only had they been unfaithful to him.
They had turned it into a spectacle.
A mockery.
The whole wedding had been a lie.
But what Sergio and Marilyn didn't know... it was that someone else was also listening behind the hallway.
Doña Elvira.
Andreina's grandmother.
A quiet, tough and respected woman in the village.
The old woman had gone out to get medicine for her blood pressure when she heard the laughter and recognized the voices.
And he recorded everything.
Every word.
Every mockery.
Every humiliation.
The next morning, when both families met for the farewell breakfast at the hacienda, Sergio appeared smiling, feigning normality.
Marilyn too.
Dressed in white.
Shameless.
Andreina went downstairs with a pale face, but in silence.
Everyone noticed something strange.
Then Doña Elvira slowly rose from her chair.
He pulled out his old cell phone.
And he said in front of everyone:
"Since last night they had so much fun making fun of my granddaughter... Now we're going to have fun listening to them.
The entire room was motionless.
And then...
The recording began to play.
Marilyn's laughter.
Sergio's mockery.
The insults.
The humiliations.
The silence that fell afterwards was brutal.
Sergio's mother went white.
A guy dropped his fork.
The wedding planner crossed herself.
And Andreina, with tears in her eyes, looked directly at Marilyn.
"You weren't my friend. You were an empty woman who needed to destroy me to feel important.
Then he looked at Sergio.
"And you never knew what it means to really love someone.
Sergio tried to get closer.
Andreina took a step back.
"Don't touch me again."
But the final blow was still to come.
Because Sergio's father, embarrassed by the scandal, revealed in front of everyone something that not even Marilyn knew.
Sergio was in debt.
He had organized that wedding to appear stable and convince his family to hand over control of some family land on the Yucatecan coast.
And after listening to the recording...
His own father disinherited him.
That same day.
Marilyn left the hacienda crying while the guests looked at her with contempt.
Sergio ended up alone.
No inheritance.
No wife.
And it has become the most shameful gossip in the entire municipality.
Meanwhile, Andreina returned months later to the same hacienda.
But this time she was not wearing a wedding dress.
His head was held high.
Because he understood something he never forgot again:
Betrayal hurts.
Humiliation destroys.
But nothing sinks a person more than laughing at the heart of someone who truly loved them. Author ©️ Blanca Vazquez Casanova
